Remapping the Campus through Indigenous Art and Architecture

Ziibiing

In honour of National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous People’s Day, join (Re)Mapping the Campus, a walking tour that will take you to several contemporary artworks by Indigenous artists on the University of Toronto’s St. George Campus.

The tour will start at Ziibiing Pavilion and Gardens, where John Croutch of the Office of Indigenous Initiatives will lead an interactive tour. Learn about Ziibiing’s cultural and spiritual connections to Indigenous cosmologies and the natural world through the Pavillion’s structure and the Garden’s native plants.

Then visit Simcoe Hall to see acknowledging the land, featuring artworks by Rebecca Belmore, Katherine Takpannie, Catherine Blackburn, Lori Blondeau, Dana Claxton, Caroline Monnet and Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory with Jamie Griffiths. Each stop offers an opportunity to learn through conversation and reflection, and to remap the campus through Indigenous points of reference.

The walk will finish with snacks, cool beverages, and informal chats about the walk and the works seen during the day.

(Re)Mapping the Campus: A Walking Tour is a collaboration between Hart House, the Art Museum of the University of Toronto, and the Office of Indigenous Initiatives.
