CIHR Research Excellence, Diversity and Independence (REDI) Early Career Transition Award Program

The CIHR and partners are investing $34.5M in the second launch of the CIHR Research Excellence, Diversity, and Independence Early Career Transition Award (2025).
About REDI 2025
A 6-year transition award supporting trainees from underrepresented groups in establishing independent research faculty careers in Canada. The first launch funded 43 trainees, and over 40% have already transitioned to independent faculty positions within 2 years.
Eligibility (2025)
Trainees, such as post-doctoral researchers, clinicians, and research associates, who self-identify as:
- Stream A: Black (any gender), racialized women, or racialized gender-diverse people
- Stream B: First Nations, Inuit, Métis (any gender)
Funding
- $34.5M in total
- Approx. 50 REDI awards (up to $660,000 each)
- Approx. 50 Community Engagement and Knowledge Mobilization Supplements (25 per stream, up to $30,000 each)
- Supports health-related research across CIHR’s mandate
